D.O.R.C.

D.O.R.C. is a Pittsburgh based disorganization of mountain bikers founded by the world renowned ultra-endurance MTB rider Carol Clemens. She decided that she would like to do a MTB ride every Wednesday evening and invited a few friends to come along and D.O.R.C. was born. D.O.R.C. stands for Disgruntled Off-Road Cyclists. I don't know what we are supposed to be disgruntled about - but we are - very. We usually go on mountain Bike rides every Wednesday evening and Sunday afternoon. Feel free to Join us anytime - just show up at the meeting spot. There is talk of an all women's beginner ride but the time/day has not ben set at this point. If you have a ride that you would like to post here or wish to send me an E-mail for any other reason please do so here.

Saturday and Sunday June 9th and 10th Two Day Charity Ride:
MS 150 Escape To The Lake (Erie)
We DORCs have created our own team and we invite you to join us. The MS 150 is a really fun ride that is well organized and supports a good cause. The ride covers 150 miles over two days and take you through some beautiful countryside all the way up to Lake Erie. The first day's ride ends at Allegheny College where most of us will camp out but if you want you can also stay in a dorm room or at a nearby hotel. This fully supported ride has all meals and necessary facilities are provided as well as mechanical support and well stocked rest stops along the way. If you have not done this ride you owe it to yourself to check it out. If you don't want to ride you can volunteer! They need lots of volunteers. The D.O.R.C. MS 150 team is up to 12 members strong and growing steadily.

We were talking about goin to the I.M.B.A. trail maintenance/ride in Ohiopyle but Larry's knee really hurts him so he may take a rest. If that is the case we just might ride locally. Any suggestions?

Light Urban/Road Ride - Meet at 12:00 PM
I am just starting to ride again - very lightly. This will be the first of several distance/training rides to prepare for the MS 150 Escape To The Lake (Erie) ride in June. We will probably cover 20 to 30 miles depending on several factors and we will be taking it easy. Meet at Thick Bikes at 12:00 PM with something you can ride on the road. Bring water and snacks. Hopefully the weather will nice.

Sunday February 18th Ride:
Ray's MTB Park - Meet at 8:00 AM
A couple of DORCs are going to ride Ray's. Join us if you would like. Entrance fee is a well worth it $18. Meet at Thick Bikes at 8:00 AM or at Iron City Bikes at 8:30 AM. Helmet required, pads suggested. If you need a ride contact me (@ Thick Bikes) or Larry.
After Note: I stupidly spained my ankle really badly and subsequently took myself out for about a month.

Wednesday February 14th Ride:
Frick Park - 7:00 PM
Night ride through crazy snow conditions - might be some walking up and sliding down. Sounds like fun. Too bad its Valentine's day and I won't be able to join you. Carol and Stick should be there. Meet at the Braddock Ave. parking lot near the tennis courts.
After Note: This may be the first Wednesday since we started that nobody rode. The terrain was very icy/crunchy and genrally sucked.

Call Carol if you would like some more info or a ride from the South Side area (412) 475-5329. If you don't know Dirt Rag is located on Saxonburg Blvd. near the mansion entrance to Hartwood Acres. It is a house that has bikes hanging from the tree out front - otherwise unmarked bit still hard to miss.

Wednesday January 31th Ride:
Pgh. Local Parks - 6:30 PM
Last Wednesday's ride was so great that we are going to do it again this week. Meet at Thick Bikes with your MTB for a Schenley and Frick Park ride. Lights will be needed. Dress appropriately. There will be no other start point for this ride.
After Note: This was the smallest DORC ride ever! Only two people showed up.

Saturday & Sunday January 27/28th Ride:
Ray's MTB Park - Cleveland Ohio
Get a discount on entry fees and help raise some money for PTAG in the process. You can get a discounted $30 entry fee for both days with half of that going to PTAG! The regular entry fee of $18 will apply for one day passes. Be sure to say that you are with the Pittsburgh Trail Advocacy Group so that they get the 50% donation! Also cheap rooms will be avilable at the nearby Holiday Inn to facilitate the two day affair (I think they are $60). There will be carpooling and if you would like to convoy with some people there will be a group meeting at the Wexford Eat'N'Park at 8:00 AM on Sunday morning. I will be happy to give rides to people and we will probably be leaving from Thick Bikes sometime Sunday morning. As a veteran of Ray's may I suggest that if you can only go for one day make it Saturday because on Sunday they allow BMXers in and they frickin' swarm the place once they get in (usually after 4:00 PM). Don't miss this opportunity to have a lot of fun while raising $$$ for a good cause.
After Note: Approx. 30 people showed up over the weekend raising almost $500 for PTAG! Way to go!

Saturday January 13th:
Frick Park - 10:00 AM
Seth Gernot is starting the tradition of working in Frick Park every second Saturday of each month. Volunteers will probably be finishing up fixing the Iron Gate Trail's few remaining muddy spots. There will almost certainly be a ride afterwards so bring work gear and riding gear. Meet at the Maintenance Building Parking Lot located off of English Lane.

Wednesday January 10th Ride:
Frick Park - 7:00 PM
Our usual time and place - Tennis court parking lot on Braddock. Bring your lights.

Kennerdale Ride - 11:00 AM
Option #2 is to go with Carol to Kennerdale where Dan Wilson will lead a ride. Meet Carol at Thick Bikes at 11:00 AM if you wanna go.

Wednesday January 3rd Ride:
Deer Lakes - 7:00 PM
It looks like this will happen. We will be riding at Deer Lakes and Elizabeth has agreed to lead us. Meet at Thick Bikes at 6:15 PM and we will convoy over to the as yet unspecified meeting spot. If you need a ride over to there, that is no problem. Bring your lights.

Frick Maintenance
Soon Frick Park will be receiving some much needed regular maintenance from a new task force set up by Seth Gernot. You DORCs know that Frick is our most ridden park and you need to get out there and lend a hand. Meet at the parking lot off of English Lane at 10:00 AM on every second Saturday of each month. See the PORC Forums for more info.

Horse Encounters
What do you do when you are riding on a trail and you see a horse coming your way? You may know a few of the correct moves but I bet you don't know them all. Find out more here and here. It is important to know what to do when dealing with these fellow trail users.

Stickers
Represent! Show the world that you are a DORC! We now have fairly large (3.75" by 4.25") vinyl stickers with the official DORC logo(above) on them. Pick up a few at any of our rides or at Thick Bikes. They are FREE!

New Domains
Tech D.O.R.C. Colin has acquired two domain names for us. dorc-pittsburgh.com and dorc-pgh.com are now ours (soon we will rule the world). Take note.

Frick Park Skills Trail
Carol and I have marked a proposed trail route starting at the upper plateau near the bleachers. Feel free to walk the route and make comments through an E-mail to me. If you would like to add your name to the list of people we can call on to help when the time comes to do some real work please send me an E-mail describing what you would like to do and I'll compile the list.

D.O.R.C. Motto
How about "The other, other white meat"?

Join I.M.B.A.
The D.O.R.C. club is a member of I.M.B.A. and you should be too. I.M.B.A. does great things for mountain biking and needs your support. Check out their website imba.com for more info.
